The Jacksonville Area Soccer Association (JASA) is pleased to offer the U8, U9, and U10 Coastal Surge Youth Soccer Academy. The Academy is available to all youth soccer players from U8 thru U10 age groups whom may be looking for an alternative to Recreation or Select Soccer. Youth Academy players will train twice a week with matches on weekends. Training days will consist of “Pool” training on one session and match day team training on the second session. Training day curriculums are subject to change based on the day’s attendance of players.
Match days will consist of two matches or more per day for each player and will be played at either our Home fields at Woodlands Park or as away games with other Youth Academy Clubs. Match days will be called “Festivals” and usually consist of two or more Youth Academy Clubs coming together and playing matches with the intent of all players being exposed to groups of different abilities. Match day teams will be selected based on our scheduled opponent, strengths, weaknesses, or based solely on age group. This will allow the staff to ensure that an appropriately competitive match is always scheduled.

Youth Academy Staff:
What is the NCYSA/JASA Youth Academy? Youth Academy is "strictly" a Player Development program which seeks to improve individual player skills, satisfaction and retention, and to build a less pressured youth soccer environment for coaches, adult spectators, and match officials. The JASA U8, U9, and U10 Youth Academies are designed to teach the fundamental skills which are absolutely necessary to fully enjoy and compete in the sport of soccer. These skills are best learned by providing clear examples through repetition and proper instruction.
The Youth Academy is designed to remove the results oriented, "win at all cost" mentality associated with youth soccer. The Academy matches and Festivals will be played without published or recorded scoring and equal playing time is guaranteed for all participants who attend training on a regular basis and maintain a good attitude.
The Academy serves as an instructional program for players ages U8 through U10 who are seeking a more structured environment than Recreational or Challenge soccer, but may not be ready for the competition, travel, and cost of associated with the Classic Soccer Program. The Youth Academy consist of player pools in 3-4 different training groups depending on the number of participants, the skill level or age of those participants. The player pools and/or training groups will be divided into teams for play during each match day or festival weekend. Academy pool teams have the liberty of adjusting their rosters as needed at each match to ensure the proper level of competition is achieved.
All Academy Coaches are required to hold United States Soccer Federation (USSF) age appropriate coaching qualifications that provide the knowledge and understanding of how children learn at different age, stages, and curriculums that are developmentally appropriate for all children. The Academy Coaching Staff is specially selected and trained to provide introduction to select soccer players in an environment conducive to learning and having FUN! All Coaches are Nationally and Regionally Licensed Coaches.
The JASA Coastal Surge Youth Academy mission is to develop the heart, mind, and body of our young athletes by developing their skills and knowledge with a dedicated and supportive staff that model what they teach. The Youth Academy Staff is fully committed to the development of our players love for the game and fundamental skill development as a player as well as skills on how to succeed in the game of life.
Youth Academy Frequently Asked Questions
1. Who will we play?
Academy teams will compete against like teams from other NCYSA Youth Academy Programs and in-house academy games.
2. How much travel will we have?
Travel usually occurs once or twice a month when associations get together to have play days or "festivals". There will be one weekend statewide festival in the fall and one in the spring. Each location for the festivals is to be determined on a yearly basis. NCYSA will help facilitate regional Academy festivals in the fall and spring.
3. What are the benefits of academy play?
The Academy program philosophy is to emphasize player development over team development and focus on the technical development of each child without the pressures of short-term wins/losses/results. This philosophy encourages players to be more creative and the playing environment becomes more enjoyable.
4. Do you keep track of scores and standings?
Matches are played in the form of academy games with NO published scores or standings.
5. Can we play in tournaments?
Yes, as long as the tournament sponsors a U10 Academy Division. It is recommended that Academies do not participate in any elimination bracket tournaments. It is recommended that they participate in festivals
6. Is there a licensing requirement for the coaches?
Each association must appoint an Academy Director who must hold a National Youth License. The Academy Director has up to two (2) years to obtain the National Youth License. Staff working with the Academy Programs must hold the Youth II Module qualification designed for working with U10/U12 players. Staff have one (1) year to obtain the Youth II qualification.
"True player development focuses on the development of the player, not the development of the team! Up to age 12, this should be the only criteria used in designing and running youth soccer programs."
